The God Who Dries Rivers to Declare His Power

Joshua 4:23–24

When God Turns Obstacles into Global Announcements

Some miracles are not meant to be hidden. They are meant to be seen, remembered, and proclaimed.

In Joshua 4:23–24, God performs a miracle so undeniable that it reshapes not only Israel’s future but the understanding of God’s power for generations to come. The Jordan River—at flood stage—stood as the final barrier between God’s people and the promise He had sworn to give them. And then, without human effort, strategy, or explanation, the river dried up.

Not to impress.
Not to entertain.
But to declare His power to the world.

“For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over… so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God.”

This miracle was a message.

Historical Background: Standing Between Wilderness and Promise

Israel had waited forty years for this moment. The wilderness season was ending, Moses was gone, and Joshua now carried the weight of leadership. Ahead lay the Promised Land. Between them flowed the Jordan River—wide, fast, and impossible to cross during harvest season.

Humanly speaking, this was the worst possible time to attempt a crossing.

Yet God intentionally chose this moment to act. Just as He once parted the Red Sea, He now dried up the Jordan. Scripture deliberately connects the two events to show a powerful truth:

The God who saved Israel then is the same God who leads them now.

This miracle confirmed Joshua’s leadership, strengthened Israel’s faith, and sent a message to surrounding nations that Israel’s God was alive, active, and unstoppable.

Why God Chose a River

God could have chosen a different path. He could have delayed the crossing or redirected the people. Instead, He chose a river—an uncontrollable, dangerous, natural obstacle.

1. Rivers Represent Human Limitation

A river cannot be argued with or commanded by human strength. By stopping the Jordan, God showed that no natural force can resist His will.

2. God Waited Until the River Was at Flood Stage

This ensured the miracle could never be explained away. No coincidence. No seasonal luck. Only divine power.

3. God Wanted a Public Testimony

This was not a private miracle. Entire nations heard about it. Fear spread—not because Israel was strong, but because their God was mighty.

A Miracle with a Mission

Joshua 4:24 reveals God’s purpose behind the miracle.

So the World Would Know

“So that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful.”

God’s miracles are missional. They point beyond personal blessing to global testimony. What God does in your life is never meant to end with you.

Your breakthrough becomes someone else’s belief.

So God’s People Would Fear Him

“So that you might always fear the LORD your God.”

This fear is not dread—it is reverent awe. Miracles are not meant to create comfort alone; they are meant to produce obedience, humility, and lifelong faithfulness.

The Twelve Stones: Preserving the Testimony

God commanded Joshua to place twelve stones from the riverbed as a memorial. These stones were not decoration; they were discipleship tools.

When future generations asked, “What do these stones mean?”, parents would tell the story of the God who dried up the river.

Faith that is not remembered will eventually be lost.

Faith That Steps Before the Miracle

One of the most powerful details of this story is often overlooked:

The priests had to step into the water before it stopped flowing.

God did not dry the river first. He waited for obedience.

This teaches a timeless truth:

  • Faith moves before clarity

  • Obedience comes before evidence

  • Trust steps forward before the way opens

Many people wait for God to remove the river before they move. Scripture shows that God often waits for us to move first.

The Jordan Rivers We Face Today

While the Jordan River was literal, its meaning is timeless.

Modern “Rivers” God Still Dries:

  • Financial impossibilities

  • Health crises

  • Family breakdowns

  • Ministry opposition

  • Fear of the future

  • Closed doors and delayed promises

The same God who dried the Jordan still works today. Sometimes He removes the obstacle. Sometimes He strengthens us to walk through it. But always, His power is revealed.

From Memory to Mission

This miracle did not end at the riverbank. It became part of Israel’s identity and testimony.

Joshua 4 reminds us that God’s actions are never isolated events. They are part of His redemptive story—one that ultimately points forward to Christ, who made the greatest crossing of all: from death to life.

Just as Israel crossed into promise, believers today cross from fear into faith because God still makes a way.

Lessons for the Church Today

1. Never Minimize Your Testimony

What God has done for you may be the stone someone else needs to believe.

2. Teach the Next Generation

Faith that is not shared will be forgotten.

3. Expect God to Act Again

Past miracles are not memories—they are evidence.

4. Live in Reverent Obedience

God’s power should always lead us to worship, not pride.

Conclusion: When God Dries Rivers, the World Takes Notice

Joshua 4:23–24 declares a truth we still need today:

When God makes a way where none existed, it is not only for deliverance—it is for declaration.

Every obstacle God overcomes becomes a testimony.
Every impossible crossing becomes a proclamation.
Every dried river becomes proof that the hand of the Lord is mighty.

The question is not whether God still has power.
The question is whether we will step forward in faith when we reach the river.
